In today's fast-paced world, it often feels like there are never enough hours in the day. As a full-time instructional designer, graphic design business owner, director of a youth training and development program, PhD student, national president of a fraternal order, speaker, executive board member of a student association, father, husband, and soon-to-be retiree from the Army Reserve, I understand the challenges of balancing multiple roles. However, it's not just about being busy—it's about being productive and purposeful. Here's how you can use your time wisely and achieve your ambitions, no matter how packed your schedule might be.

One of my Command Sergeant Majors (CSM) asked me one day what was my why? I didn't understand then, but I do now. She saw me working and going in early and leaving later, as well as volunteering for assignments whereas I could gain more access to better opportunities. While many of my peers laughed and called me a "go'fer" a derogatory term for someone who just does what anyone asks. I kept going due to a why I didn't really understand. Your "why" must reflect on what drives you. Why do you do what you do? Whether it's advancing your career, making a difference in your community, or providing for your family, understanding your "why" will keep you motivated and focused. Write it down and revisit it regularly to keep yourself grounded.

In a leadership training, I learned about the Eisenhower Matrix, a powerful tool for visualizing and organizing tasks throughout my day. The Eisenhower Matrix helps categorize tasks into four distinct categories:


  1. Urgent and important: Do these immediately.

  2. Important but not urgent: Schedule these tasks.

  3. Urgent but not important: Delegate if possible.

  4. Neither urgent nor important: Eliminate these tasks.


Plan Your Day

Start your day with a clear plan. Use tools like to-do lists or digital planners to organize your tasks. Block out time for focused work, and don't forget to schedule breaks to recharge.

One of the most powerful time management tools is the ability to say no. Evaluate requests and opportunities against your goals and purpose. If they don't align, it's okay to decline. In our quest to be helpful, cooperative, and often indispensable, we tend to say "yes" to almost every request that comes our way. While this can make us appear accommodating and dedicated, it often leads to overcommitment, stress, and a dilution of focus on what truly matters. Learning to say "no" is not about being uncooperative or difficult; it's about protecting your time, maintaining your priorities, and ensuring that you can deliver your best work.
